Spoilery as fuck! Beware!

Ch. 4 Deadly Life: Nagito POV

Nagito: It's okay if you guys eat, but can you hear me out while you're at it?
Gundham: ...What is it?
Nagito: Well, I was thinking about what we should do and I wanted to discuss it.
Fuyuhiko: Thanks to the killer, we can't even go to the crime scene. We have to wait till Kazuichi fixes the elevator.
Nagito: True... There is no doubt that the killer is responsible.... But it seems as though they made a huge mistake. There's no way the "Symbols of Hope" will give up because of this little setback... There's no way everyone will just...cross their arms and wait for the class trial to start... We need to do everything we can on our end to prepare for the class trial, right?
Fuyuhiko: ... ...W-Well yeah.
Gundham: It seems that we too shall begin the investigation on our end. Though it remains unclear how much we can do... ...Is this acceptable? If I show my serious side, things will not end with mere child's play.
Ah, I'm so glad! I knew you guys were pumped up from the start!
...How beautiful.
Even though you guys are suffering from despair, I can see that you guys are still fighting for hope...
Ah, such beauty.
There is no higher honor for me than to investigate this murder with you guys.
So...we need to be grateful toward Nekomaru for becoming the foundation of this hope...
Well, regardless...
Whose side should I be on for this case?
The killer...?
Or the rest of you guys...?
I must make sure I face this case's mystery properly if I'm going to find out which side is the true hope.

Nagito: Aha...hahahahaha... Hey, you guys... Why don't we try arranging the sequence of events in this case?

Just as I thought, this telephone is connected to Grape House.
If a means of communication was prepared, it's as if something like this was expected to happen...

Nagito: ...Well, I'm probably overthinking things.

Nagito: Hmm, "Hope's Peak Academy Founder: Izuru Kamukura".
I understand why the school would immortalize such an important person in a portrait...
But why would they put it in a place like this? What are they trying to show to me?

They're probably on the other side of this security camera...watching everything.
Even though we're suffering from despair, they're watching everyone fight beautifully for hope!
...In a way, I'm jealous.
They get to see things we don't even know about... They get to see the full spectrum of hope...!

Nagito: Then...from the time you saw Nekomaru until the alarm rang... ...You were at the lounge the whole time? But...what were you doing during that time? By chance, were you thinking about everything that's happened so far and getting choked up...?
Fuyuhiko: ...Wha-!?
Nagito: ...Huh!? Was I right?
Fuyuhiko: ...Of course not, asshole! Y-You're completely wrong!
Nagito: I'm sorry, I'm sorry! You're absolutely right!
And I thought you were reminiscing about Peko or something...
...But that can't be, right?
After all, you already know how pointless it is to cling to memories of the dead.

Nagito: Hey Kazuichi... If you don't mind, can you inform me? That stuff about a rumbling noise and the ringing clock... What was all that about?
Kazuichi: Seriously...? You don't know?
Nagito: You're so kind, Kazuichi. Thank you for actually taking the time to explain it to me!
Kazuichi: ...Huh!? Hmph...so that's how it is... Fine, I'll tell you.

Kazuichi: ...And that's what happened.
Nagito: I see...so you're the one who was clinging to Fuyuhiko?
Kazuichi: Th-That's not the important part!

Nagito: Yep, what you said just now was extremely important. Thanks to that, I've thought of one suspicious person.
Gundham: ...Who are you talking about?
Nagito: ...Me, of course.
Kazuichi: Huh!?
Nagito: I mean...isn't it strange?
I was the only one who didn't notice an alarm that was so loud, everyone else came out of their rooms... Well, the same goes for the rumbling noise that you guys heard after that.
Fuyuhiko: Hey... You better not be trying to confuse the shit out of us.
Nagito: Of course I'm not...for now.

Kazuichi: Hey, haven't we talked enough... I really think I should repair the elevator soon...
Nagito: Oh my... You're still here?
Kazuichi: Gah...! Once the elevator's fixed, I'm not gonna let you anywhere near it...!
And so Kazuichi ran down the stairs, complaining for some reason.

Fuyuhiko: Huh? Why?
Nagito: I'll...tell you later.
Fuyuhiko: Fine, but...why you askin' me? You can investigate that yourself...
Nagito: I would investigate it myself but... By the time the elevator is fixed, there's a chance I might not be with you all anymore.
Fuyuhiko: ...Huh?
Nagito: Anyway...I'm counting on you.

There's a lot of playground equipment here... Everyone would scold me if they caught me playing with it.

Nagito: If this flower represents hope, then I'm the soil in which they extend their roots...maybe? ...Nah. That's still too presumptuous of me. I'm just a brief meal...

Kazuichi: The elevator is still being repaired... Get lost... ...Jeez, stop getting in the way.
Nagito: Ahaha, looks like I'm disliked... Oh well, it's understandable.

Kazuichi: ...Hey, I don't have time to talk to you! Hurry up and go away! ...Jeez, I'm trying to do repairs without any tools. No matter how much time I get, it won't be enough.
Nagito: If you don't have any tools...why don't you use this?
Kazuichi: Hm...? I-Is this a multi-tool!? Where'd you get something like this!?
Nagito: I had it with me...before I even arrived at the fourth island. If we're going to explore a new island, it's essential to bring this kind of equipment, right?
Kazuichi: A guy like you...has been walking around with a dangerous tool...this whole time...
Nagito: Huh? Is there something wrong?
Kazuichi: I-It's nothing...!
Nagito: Then I'll let you have this. Your repairs might go faster now, right? But in exchange...I want you to do something.
Kazuichi: ...What?
Nagito: That multitool has a compass... After the elevator is fixed, I want you to ride the elevator and see how the compass reacts.
Kazuichi: ...Wh-What the hell for!?
Nagito: Well, to be honest... There's something I still don't understand... ...regarding the structure of this building. So please... I really need this information to find out the relationship between the building and the elevator.
Kazuichi: I don't really get it, but... Well, as long as I'm just checking a compass, I don't mind.
Nagito: I'm glad...then I'll leave the rest to you.

Also...unlike everyone else, I don't mind dying at all.
That's all the more reason why...I should go.

Monomi: I-I heard the body discovery announcement... And I thought...something happened in this room...
Nagito: And you got locked in when you came inside? You're a fool from head to toe.
Monomi: I-I am truly ashamed...
Nagito: Well, not that I care... Just make sure you don't get in my way.
Monomi: Get in your way...?
Nagito: The Life-Threatening Game is going to start soon, right? It'd be annoying if you got in my way.
Monomi: A-A-Are...you planning to do it?
Nagito: Well..if I don't, I can't get out of here, right? And besides...the only way trash like me can be useful is by risking my life for everyone's sake.
Monomi: You're wrong! Nagito is not trash at all! There's no such thing as a human being who doesn't deserve to live! I know I'm being heartwarming right now, but my heart is super scared and pounding like crazy!
Nagito: ...Are you sure you're not just excited? You know, isn't it exciting to think that I can finally be useful for the sake of those who shoulder hope?

Monomi: Huh, huh, huuuuhhh!? H-How can you know that much already!?
Nagito: I told you, don't worry about it... Let's get this over with, I'm starting to get bored...

Nagito: Reusing gimmicks that were already used does conserve energy.

Monomi: ... Is there any chance that that thing I found earlier was just joking around....?
Nagito: ...Seems like you have something on your mind.

Nagito: Enough with the excuses... Hurry up and show it to me.

Nagito: Hmm, I see... So that's what it meant...
Monomi: U-Um... What does it mean?
Nagito: It means the games up till now were just the opening act... From this point on is the real performance.

Nagito: Hey Monomi... There's something I wanted to ask you... In all honesty, I don't really understand the rules of Russian Roulette...
Monomi: Ah, if that's the case... Load one bullet into the cylinder, then spin it. After that, point the gun toward you and pull the trigger... ...Wait, you can't do that! There's a one-in-six chance you'll die!
Nagito: A one-in-six chance of death... Which means the failure rate is only one-sixth... Hey, is that rule really okay?
Monomi: Huh?
Nagito: I mean...if there's only a one-sixth chance of failing, wouldn't the game be too easy? So...shouldn't it be the opposite? Remove one bullet from the gun...and then use it while there are still five bullets loaded... If you do that, there will be a one-sixth chance of success... Yep, that would definitely make it a more thrilling game!
Monomi: Wh-What are you saying...?
Nagito: Let's give it a go!

Nagito: I mean, if my luck gets me killed like this... There's no way you can really call that talent. If I'm truly the Ultimate Lucky Student, I need to survive here! ...Isn't that right?

Nagito: Ah, that sound just now... That was the door unlocking, right? Haha! Looks like we finally cleared the Final Dead Room.
Monomi: ... I-I... I...I'm scared of you...Nagito.
Nagito: ...Hm? Really? Oh well, let's go... The Octagon should be just beyond that door.

Nagito: Our time at Hope's Peak Academy, huh... But after all this time... I still can't believe it...
Monokuma: You mean that matter concerning your stolen school memories...?
NagitO: I mean... A no-good person like me actually spent time with everyone else at Hope's Peak Academy...? No, that's impossible! If that's true...how did I feel...? Surely...I would've spent my time feeling ashamed of myself for being in the presence of such greatness...
Monokuma: Jeez... Whether you're upbeat or depressed, I still don't understand you at all! Oh well! Anyway, I'm passing this along to you! How you use it is up to you!
Nagito: Thanks...I'll take a long look at it later.
So if I look at these profiles, I'll be able to find out what Hajime's hidden talent is, too.
He'll probably be happy about it! Yay! Someone like me was finally useful!

Monokuma: Puhuhu...!
Nagito: ...Hm? What are you laughing about?
Monokuma: Well, I just thought it was ironic... Out of everyone here, someone like you was the one who obtained Hope's Peak Academy's student profiles... I'm not sure if you're lucky or unlucky...
Nagito: What...does that mean?
Monokuma: But...looks like things are gonna get interesting... Yes, Nagito! You might be the one who makes things much more interesting!
I don't really know...what you're talking about.

Nagito: A refrigerator...? Here...?
I wasn't expecting to find drinks in it... But when I opened the door and peeked inside...
I see, there are poisons stored in here!

Nagito: You could secretly kill everyone with poison... In a way, it can be considered the most powerful weapon. But, in that case...you'd have to ignore the rules. Regardless...it's slightly different than an Ultimate Weapon.
Something called "Ultimate"...should make my heart dance with joy.

*** The "Ultimate" in Ultimate Weapon isn't the same word as SHSL.

Why is there only one window in a place like this...?
Nagito: It looks like there's some kind of hidden meaning to it... But in actuality, what could it mean?
In my mind, I entertained various possibilities as I walked slowly toward the window.
And then...the moment I peeked out that window...

Nagito: ...Huh!? Th-This is...!
What I actually saw outside that window...
It was completely different from any possibility I had in mind.

Nagito: ... Heh, heh heh... Aha...hahaha... Ahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I see! So that's what it was!

A chain reaction culminating in the truth, all thanks to just one clue...
Nagito: Haha...I know that now's not the time to enjoy things but... ...This is definitely a good feeling!

Nagito: Now, all I have to do is tell everyone else about this... But before I do that... I should finally take a look at the file I received from Monokuma... Especially if it's everyone's student profiles from their time at Hope's Peak Academy... That's important.
I cautiously opened the file and read it carefully, taking care not to miss a single letter...
Carefully...

Nagito: ... ...
[The screen turns black, and the dialogue box shakes.]
Nagito: ...Huh?

Ch. 4 Deadly Life

Nagito: Why hello there, Hajime...
Hajime: N-Nagito!? Why are you here!?
Nagito: ...Because I showed up.
Hajime: You showed up...? How did you even come here!?
Nagito: ... Maybe I...teleported.
Hajime: ...Huh?

Hajime: H-Hey... Answer me seriously. How were you able to come to this side?
Nagito: Before I do that...there's something I need to tell you guys.
Hajime: ...There is?
Nagito: I tried to investigate Strawberry House as much as I could... I'll give you those details first. Let's hurry this up.

Nagito: Also...there's one more thing I need to tell you guys... [BEAM.] I've cleared the Final Dead Room!

Nagito: Ah, so that's how you're supposed to play it.. So it would've been fine if I'd only used one bullet, huh? I guess it was just as Monomi said.
Chiaki: Huh?
Nagito: I misunderstood and thought that I had to take one bullet out of the cylinder...so that's how I did it.

Hajime: Move back and forth...? Where would you even be able to do that, and how?
Nagito: Hey, Hajime... You've been repeating yourself over and over and it's bugging me. Can you let me speak freely for a change?
Hajime: ...Huh?
Nagito: Anyway...I'm definitely lucky. Thanks to that, I was able to clear the roulette at the highest difficulty...

Nagito: But even when we learn more about the killing school life, it has no relevance to us whatsoever. There was information about the order of the killings, and who the killer was for each incident... I find it extremely boring to read about the deaths of people that I don't even know. ...Besides Byakuya, of course.
Hajime: Then it's just as I thought... That Byakuya was the Byakuya we knew, right?
Nagito: However, I can't say the information was completely useless. In truth, there are similarities between the killing school life and this killing school trip.
Hajime: Similarities?
Nagito: For example, the first murder involved someone important getting stabbed to death in an unexpected place... The second murder revealed the presence of a serial killer among the group... And the third murder was actually two killings that happened in succession... What do you guys think about these strange similarities?
Hajime: I-It's definitely strange...
Nagito: I can't think of these as coincidences, especially if Monokuma is behind the motives and driving the murders.
Chiaki: ...What are you trying to say?
Nagito: By the way, the fourth murder of the killing school life was apparently ruled a suicide.
Hajime: Huh...?
Nagito: Whether that means something or not...is something each person should think about on their own. I just...wanted to tell you guys the truth.
Hajime: The truth? Are you sure you're not just trying to confuse us?
Nagito: Jeez... Your complaints just never end, do they? If you're gonna talk like that, I won't want to tell you any more. And I even learned what your talent is, too...

Chiaki: Does that...have information about our stolen memories?
Nagito: Unfortunately...I couldn't find any clues about that. This file doesn't contain our information, just Hajime's information.
Hajime: J-Just...m-mine..?
Chiaki: Isn't that weird? Why only Hajime's information?
Nagito: It's quite troubling that you would ask me that. I must say...it was always interesting that Hajime was the only one who couldn't remember his talent... But that ends now.
Hajime: A-Are you serious...? Did you really find out why I was chosen by Hope's Peak Academy...!
Nagito: In a way...it's just as Chiaki said. Hajime's existence is special. Because...you were...
[Wham.]
Nagito: Just some Reserve Course student from the Reserve Department.

Nagito: Which means you're just a stepladder... But you should feel honored. An average, talentless human can be put to good use for those who are known as mankind's hope!
Hajime: Wh-What the hell...does that mean...?
Nagito: Perhaps...you simply weren't determined enough. Did you admire hope...? Were you willing to sacrifice your body and soul to attend Hope's Peak Academy? Or maybe...you were just obsessed with Hope's Peak Academy, like a fangirl following the latest trend.
Hajime: I-It's not like that...! I...!
Nagito: "...wanted to become hope!"? If that's what you're thinking, just stop it. Listen carefully... The only humans worthy of becoming hope possess amazing talents and a strong will. And...the moment you're born into this world, you either have that or you don't. It has nothing to do with effort! You must be chosen by hope to become hope! That's why...it's not even worth admiring... Or...were you so blinded by your admiration for Hope's Peak Academy that you couldn't even see that?
Hajime: ...Gh!
Nagito: You're just some nobody from the Reserve Course who never had a talent to begin with. A nobody who forgot he was a nobody... That's all.

Nagito: Aww, I feel sorry for you... Are you shocked to learn that you were the only one who didn't have a talent...? But still, if you think about it positively, it looks like there's no more reason to doubt you. Now that we know who you are...a normal, average, utterly unremarkable high school student... There's no way you could be associated with the Future Foundation.
Hajime: ...
Nagito: But...if it's not Hajime, then who in the world could the traitor be?

Nagito: ...Hey, are you listening?
Chiaki: There's no need...for you to listen to this.
Nagito: ...Huh?
Chiaki: It may be important to talk about who the traitor is, but we need to focus on Mechamaru's murder first. Because...if we can't survive the class trial, everyone is going to die together anyway...
Nagito: In that case, would the traitor be among those killed as well? That's something I truly wonder about... Oh well. It's fine...I'll stop for now.

Nagito: Been through enough...? We need to perform this investigation so we can find out who the killer is. Or perhaps you don't want to know, Akane? Maybe you don't care about what happened to Nekomaru...
Akane: Wh-Why you...!
Nagito: If you such at using your brain and you really want to know who the killer is, try not to interfere so much.

Hajime: Huh? Where did you get that tool knife?
Kazuichi: Nagito gave it to me... He said he had it ready before we even went to the amusement park.
So Nagito did that, too...
It's like...Nagito has full control of the situation...

What's wrong with him...? He's crouching over Nekomaru's body, and it almost seems like he's glaring at him...

Nagito: It's called "recycling!" It's a much better alternative than disposing it with the rest of the junk, right?

Nagito: Hajime...you're going to come later too, right? It'd be really bothersome if you didn't. I mean, if there's someone in the tower, the door won't open at all... So you should at least make sure you're not pulling my leg.
After tersely saying that, Nagito left the area.

Nagito: Yep, just as I thought. It was definitely the right choice to confirm this.
Hajime: Just as you thought...? Then you already knew about this mystery...
Nagito: You have a bad habit of relying on others when you don't understand. Why don't you try investigating first?

I guess it doesn't matter if it's a trap or not...
One by one, everyone went into Monokuma Rock.
Until...I was the only one left, and when I was about to take a step forward...

Nagito: We're the same... The same...stepladders...
Hajime: ...Huh?
Nagito was suddenly standing next to me with his eyes locked on to Monokuma Rock...
Other than the small movements of his mouth, he was perfectly still.

Nagito: You and I...are just stepladders. For everyone who holds the title of Ultimate... I always believed that I didn't mind... Unlike you, I know my place.
Hajime: Wh-What are you...saying...?
Nagito: That's why I was prepared to become a sacrifice at any time. And from that, true hope would be born... I always believed that the talent that survived would be true hope. But it wasn't! There is no hope amidst all this killing!
Hajime: O-Of course there isn't! What kind of hope comes from killing people!?
Nagito: Hm? Really...? Are you suggesting...that sacrificing others for hope isn't real hope...? But...you're wrong. It's only natural and extremely obvious that strong hope devours weak hope. After all, that's what it means to live, right!?
Hajime: Th-There's no way I'm going to accept that...!
Nagito: Oh well... It's not like that's what I wanted to say to you anyway. There's this one novel I like... It's a peculiar mystery story...
Hajime: ...Huh? A novel?
Nagito: The story is told from the point-of-view of a high school girl involved in a serial killer mystery... But when you get to the end... Surprise, surprise! The girl was actually the killer! Of course, the story is written carefully so the reader doesn't learn the ending in the middle of the story... The protagonist is just a projection of the reader... And this projection turns out to be the killer... Which means the killer you were looking for the whole time was inside you all along... How do you feel about novels like that?
Hajime: Wh-What the heck are you talking about...? You're just jumping from one topic to another... And...I can't comment on a book that I've never read before.
Nagito: ...Such a normal answer. I should've expected that from a talentless Reserve Course student like you.
Hajime: Gh...!
Nagito: But... I know that you don't matter at all, so why do I care about you? You admire hope... I love hope... In some ways we're similar, but maybe that difference is what's making me so emotional.
Hajime: Enough already! I don't have time to argue with you! Let's go! Everyone is waiting!
Nagito: Everyone, huh...? So you still believe you're just like everyone else... Reserve Course students are so full of themselves! Heh, heh...hahahahahaha!
Nagito's chilling laugh continued as he disappeared into Monokuma Rock.

Ch. 4 Trial
Nagito: ... You guys...are the same as usual... You're unable to clear a path to the future with your own powers, so you just stand there and falter... What a waste of talent! And you all intend to fight the Future Foundation? You make me laugh!
Kazuichi: Wh-What did you say...!?
Nagito: Regardless...it's not like I want to die with the rest of you, so I guess I should lend a hand.
Fuyuhiko: Hey Nagito... What the hell happened to you? How come you're not talking like a lunatic any more!?
Nagito: I've learned a valuable lesson: ignorance is by far the greatest shame...

Kazuichi: Give us the answer, not a friggin' hint!
Nagito: But then it wouldn't mean anything. I need you guys to do this class trial properly. It's also important for me because it will help me...determine something...
Determine...? Is he...talking about the traitor? If so...why did Nagito say that all of a sudden? Did something happen to him...?

Nagito: Instead of explaining it, it might be faster just to show you. At an opportune time, I found a perfect camera in the Final Dead Room...
Gundham: You took a picture?
Nagito: Yep...
Nagito grinned creepily as he retrieved a small digital camera from his inner pocket...

Nagito: There's no way I'd lie at such an important moment. I don't want to die either...
Fuyuhiko: What happened to the bastard who kept saying how much they didn't mind dying!?
Nagito: He's right... There was a time when I thought I could become a stepping stone for your hopes, but... ...I will sincerely retract that remark.
Akane: Retract?
Nagito: I'm disappointed too, you know... If this was a murder for the sake of hope, I'd happily sacrifice myself...
Gundham: Kehehe... You say such falsehoods, per usual... There is no such thing as murder for the sake of hope. Murder is simply murder... Forcibly sacrificing others for one's own desires...! Even one as diabolical as I would avoid such actions!
Nagito: I see...

Nagito: You'll know I'm not lying when you listen to what Fuyuhiko's going to say next.
Fuyuhiko: ...Huh? What the hell do you mean?
Nagito: You witnessed Nekomaru going toward the tower... Did something else happen after that?

Gundham: D-Do not panic... The truth...shall now commence...! At the time, I left my room to go to the bathroom. By coincidence, I heard the alarm. That's right, that's all it was... The world is always so simple.
Chiaki: Are you saying it was just a coincidence? Isn't that timing a little too perfect?
Gundham: And yet, I'm being suspected by all of you... It seems it was actually horrible timing on my part.
Nagito: I see... You're still holding out... Well, you don't have to admit it. We're going to decide who the killer is with a majority vote anyway. So...why don't we just go ahead and start voting? It's obvious that Gundham is the killer.
Hajime: H-Hold on a sec...
Nagito: ...You know, Hajime. This class trial...this killing... It's merely the opening act, you know.
Monokuma: Heeeeey! What do you mean the class trial is just the opening act!?
Nagito: Perhaps I should say...it's just a farce? Just a boring farce... So boring, so stressful... I'm so painfully bored that I might develop stomach ulcers... Seriously! Let's just hurry up and finish this before I collapse from poor health!
Hajime: Nagito...something definitely happened to you, didn't it?
Nagito: ...Hm?
Hajime: At some point during the investigation, your behavior became even weirder... What...what actually happened? Did you discover something?
Nagito: ... [A small snort of laughter.] Well, let's just leave that fun for later, and finish this opening act already...

I guess they were too busy with other matters. Or maybe...they've reached their limit?
Regardless...I was saved.
Things would get complicated if they found out.
*Sigh* Anyway...
I can't forgive this...
This...should never be forgiven...
There's no way I can let this run loose... I'll be the one who stops this once and for all.
Even if it costs me my life...
For the sake of hope...I cannot ignore this!

Monokuma: Allll right! Monokuma has arrived! Who summoned me!?
Nagito: ...Thanks for coming.
Monokuma: Why it's the lonely little Nagito! Are you all alone tonight, too!? So what's up? Your face looks scary.
Nagito: I see...so you can tell...
Monokuma: Ah, perhaps you found out who the traitor is?
Nagito: You know me well... ...Is what I'd like to say but, unfortunately, I haven't learned that yet.
Monokuma: I seeee, so even you don't know, huh... Looks like the final showdown is gonna take a little more time.
Nagito: ...
Monokuma: So why'd you summon me anyway? Were you finally gonna confess your love?
Nagito: I summoned you...because there's something I really need to ask you. It's about...the special prize from the Final Dead Room.
Monokuma: Oh yeah... What about it?
Nagito: There was information about sixteen people in the file I received... But isn't that weird?
Monokuma: What's weird?
Nagito: Well...there's a traitor from the Future Foundation hiding among us, right? Including that person...the total number of students would be sixteen, right? But this file contains documents that were created at Hope's Peak Academy, right?
Monokuma: That's right! I just reused the stuff that the former headmaster spent a lot of time making!
Nagito: If this file even contains information about the traitor... Was that person also a former student of Hope's Peak Academy?
Monokuma: Puhuhu...I wonder.
Nagito: Could it be...? Is this your doing? Did you slip false information into the file? Were you trying to keep us from learning the traitor's identity by obtaining this information...?
Monokuma: ... What's wrong with that? If it's my job to heat things up, it's okay if I do something small like that, right?
Nagito: That's not my point... My point is...you already know who the traitor is.
Monokuma: ... ...What's wrong with that? Well, you're splendidly correct when you say, "I knew who the traitor was all along..." But even though I know who it is, why do you think I ignored it on purpose? It's just like Monomi after losing her Magic Stick! The traitor's existence means absolutely nothing to me!
Nagito: Their existence means nothing, huh...
Monokuma: Well, that's just how I feel. I'm sure you guys feel somewhat different. After all...that person is the evil Future Foundation lackey who's putting you guys through this awful stuff!
Nagito: Hmmm...that's not entirely true... I didn't really come here to fight or anything like that... Instead, I came here to offer my cooperation, you know?
Monokuma: ...Cooperation?
Nagito: Your purpose...is to fill everyone on this island with despair, right? That's why you're intentionally letting the traitor do as they please, right?
Monokuma: Yep, yep!
Nagito: If that's the case...I might be able to cooperate somewhat too. However...in exchange, I want to know who the traitor is.
Monokuma: I see... Interesting, very interesting... ...Obviously that's a biiiig no-no! I mean...I want to make everyone in your group feel despair! That includes you, too!
Nagito: ...Well, I knew you would say that.
Monokuma: Besides...I just wouldn't be able to handle the sadness when you inevitably betray me later on...
Nagito: Hahaha... Just as I thought, you saw right through me... No matter what situation I find myself in, my core way of thinking will never change... In order to create absolute hope that shines brightly, stepladders such as myself and despair exist...
Monokuma: Puhuhu, you're right! You're a true believer of hope after all! I must say, that belief...reminds me of that person for some reason!
Nagito: Reminds you...? I don't know who you're talking about, but if someone as worthless as me reminds you of some other person... ...they must be extremely unlucky.
Monokuma: But you're just as unlucky, right? I mean, the fact that you're even involved in something like this...
Nagito: Am I? I actually think I'm very lucky.
Monokuma: ...Huh?
Nagito: Wouldn't you say that coming across this much despair is a rather rare opportunity? I can't rely on anyone on this island... That's why I have to be the one who does it... If I can eliminate despair from this island, I won't be a stepladder anymore. I'll become...true hope...
Nagito: I'll become an existence that could even be called Ultimate Hope!
Monokuma: Puhuhu... The two of you are alike. You definitely remind me of him.
Nagito: Hey, there's one more thing I want to ask you.
Monokuma: ...Hm?
Nagito: Who are you waiting for on this island?
Monokuma: ...Huh?
Nagito: Looks like I'm right again... You're definitely waiting for someone on this island... Is the person you're waiting for already on this island?
Monokuma: ...
Nagito: Well? Answer my question.
Monokuma: If...if that's the case... If that person is already on this island... Puhuhu! Wouldn't that be exciting!? Aaaaaahahahahaha!
Nagito: [He looks unimpressed.] ...
[5 DAYS LEFT.]

Ch. 5 Daily Life

Sonia: It is simply a false entity that Monokuma made up so we would be suspicious of each other! How can you not believe in your friends after everything we have endured together!?
???: Weak...how weak...
[He pops up off to the side of the group.]
Nagito: Instead of facing the problem directly and overcoming it...you're desperately trying to run away... That weakness...is hopeless!

Chiaki: ... The timing of his arrival seems planned. It seems like he might've been watching our actions...maybe.

Hajime: Nagito...where have you been this whole time?
Nagito: I wonder where your thought process wandered off to... As usual, you guys just keep running around in circles... What are you, hamsters? Oops. If I compare you guys to hamsters, will I get yelled at by that weakling who dropped out?
Sonia: Wh-What does that...?
Nagito: You asked "where I've been this whole time", right? Well, I was in the middle of looking for someone.
Hajime: Looking for someone...?
Nagito: I thought that person might've already arrived...but I guess I was wrong. Or maybe...that person is hiding in a secret location and carefully watching us...?
Fuyuhiko: Hey, who are you talking about...? Are you saying there's someone else on this island besides us...?
[Music stops.]
Nagito: It's probably the survivor of the killing school life.
Chiaki: ...Huh?
Nagito: If so, a lot of things might start adding up, don't you think?
Hajime: Are you...talking about Byakuya? He's the "survivor" you're talking about, right?
Nagito: ...Huh? Oh, I see...you guys have only reached that stage...

Nagito: But still...if you think about it properly, you might be able to figure it out... Why would Byakuya, a survivor of the killing school life, die in vain like he did at the very beginning...? Don't you think it's strange?

Nagito: Aww...it looks like I'm being hated... Well, that's understandable. There's no way you guys can even comprehend my suffering... Knowing the truth...can be pretty painful in its own way.
Hajime: The truth...? What truth...? What do you know?
Nagito: Curious, are you...? But...why don't I tell you guys that after we've found out who the traitor is?
Hajime: ...Huh?
Nagito: To tell you the truth, I still haven't figured out who the traitor is... But it won't take me very long! You guys don't have to worry... I'll weed out the traitor, even if it costs me my life!
Fuyuhiko: Y-You're going to weed out the traitor...?
Sonia: A-As I have already said, there is no traitor!
Kazuichi: Heh, I'll bet in the end, you're just gonna raise your hand and go, "I'm actually the traitor!", right?
Nagito: Hahaha! You're a funny guy, Kazuichi! But...why don't I tell you guys that after we've found out who the traitor is? If I'm able to wipe out all the despair on this island, will I...? Will I become...the Ultimate Hope?

Nagito: Now then, I should get going... But if you see Monokuma again, there's something I want you to tell him. Tell him...he doesn't need to provide a motive anymore.
Hajime: Huh?
Nagito: Tell him not to worry because I'm planning to go all out. Besides, the next one will probably be the last...
Chiaki: Nagito...what does that mean?
Nagito: ...Bye.
Nagito ignored Chiaki's question and left us. We were powerless to stop him.
It was clear to us...that trying to stop him would just be useless.

Nagito: I'm happy you're asking someone like me, but I have other things I need to do. So don't worry about me... Have fun spending time with the others.
*** This happens at the military base, but compared to the next line when you try to spend time with him at the vendor stalls, it seems like it belongs back in Chapter 1.

Nagito: ...What is it? Although I'm not being as extreme as Fuyuhiko was, I don't intend to interact with you guys at all. ...C'mon, go away.
Looks like it's pointless to talk to him...

Instinctively, my entire body tensed up.
I knew it was probably someone like Sonia or maybe Kazuichi, but regardless, I was nervous...

Hajime: Not that I can help it... I mean, so much has happened since we arrived at this island...
While mumbling to myself, I quietly opened my cottage door...
Nagito: Why hello there, Hajime.

Hajime: You... What are you doing here...?
Nagito: ...You sure ask weird questions. I mean...you guys all have business with me, right?
Hajime: ...Huh?
Nagito: Chiaki invited me to the lobby. She said she had something she wanted to talk to me about. Everyone put her up to that, right?
Hajime: ...
He's already found out about our plan...!
Nagito: Looks like...that's a bingo, huh?
Hajime: ...
Nagito: But it's good timing. I have some business with you guys, too.
Hajime: You do...?
Nagito: If everyone's already at the lobby, that saves me a lot of trouble. And...I want you to come to the lobby too, even though you're not directly involved with the plan...
Hajime: You...even know that...
Nagito: Just as I thought...you were left out, huh. But that's understandable. Since you're the only one who isn't an Ultimate, you've basically been left out from the start.
Hajime: ...
Nagito: I'm only joking... Don't make such a scary face.
Hajime: Your joke...isn't funny.
Nagito: You shouldn't take me so seriously. Oh well... Anyway, let's hurry over to the lobby. I don't know the details of your plan, so I'm actually looking forward to it. I wonder what you guys are going to do to me. When we first arrived at this island, we were friends who explored this place together! So let's go already!
Hajime: ... ...Fine, let's go.
Nagito: ...Yeah. [He smiles.]

If Chiaki has summoned Nagito, then the plan has already started... Fuyuhiko and Akane should be waiting inside for Nagito...
Nagito: What happened, Hajime...? What are you so nervous about...?
Hajime: I'm...not nervous...
Nagito: Haha...you're a terrible actor... Oh well... If you're going to slow down like that, I'll go inside first.
As I hesitated in front of the door, Nagito walked past me and entered the hotel lobby.
And that's when it happened...

Akane: ...All right, I got him!
Nagito: ... Um... What are you doing?
Fuyuhiko: Don't judge us for this...but we're gonna tie you up!
Nagito: Haha, tie me up?
Kazuichi: Th-There's no use struggling!
Nagito: ...But I'm not struggling.
Kazuichi: Huh...?
Fuyuhiko: Wh-What the hell...? You're being strangely cooperative...
Kazuichi: Wh-Who cares!? Just tie him up before it's too late!
Nagito: ... You guys are really disappointing... How long are you going to continue behaving so shortsightedly? You gotta look at the big picture, you know...
Fuyuhiko: Huh...? What are you talking about?
Nagito: It's fine if you don't understand... You can just see the end without knowing.
Nagito: Now then, let's begin! The beginning of the end of Jabberwock Island!

Hajime: Wh-What's...going on...?
...are the words that left my mouth, but they vanished before they ever left my ears.
They were drowned out by the sound of terrifying laughter.
I looked up and saw the source of that laughter...

Nagito: Aaaaaaahahahaha! It's amazing! These amazing fireworks surely befit the beginning of the end! It's over. This is the end. The killings are done for good! Scapegoating the weak in the name of "justice", while fearing when the others will stab you in the back... This game of self-righteous hypocrisy ends now! And to do that... I will destroy Jabberwock Island!
Hajime: ...!? Wh-What do you mean...?
Nagito: That was just a little demonstration. That's why it's the beginning of the end... The actual bomb I'm going to use isn't nearly as weak.

Nagito: Of course, I doubt we'll walk away from this unharmed... But...there's no other way. The actor is expected to leave the stage during the finale.

Akane: A-Are you...crazy or somethin'...!?
Nagito: ... No...that's...not it...
*** The wording is the same as Naegi's familiar "no, that's wrong".
Nagito: I'm not the crazy one here... The one who's really crazy is--
Monokuma: My my, this guy... I'm totally shocked!

Nagito: Do you really think I'd go this far for a joke?
Akane: Wh-Where...where did you set 'em up...?
Nagito: Mmmm...I can't tell you... It'd be easy to leave you on your own, but it just wouldn't be fair if I did that! So how about this? If the traitor comes forward and reveals their identity to me, I'll tell them where I hid the bombs!

Monomi: Ha-wa-wa!? N-Nagito...!? What are you planning to do?
Nagito: ...Do I really have to say it?
Monomi: ... I-It's no use... I mean...the traitor shouldn't be able to reveal their identity on their own...
Nagito: ...Hm? What does that mean?
Monomi: [Angry face!] ...Do I really have to say it?

Monokuma: Punishment always happens afterward, not before! That's just the rules of society, right!?
Nagito: But even so, there's no need to worry about that in the first place. As long as the traitor comes forward, this can all be resolved peacefully... It'll all be fine... I'm pretty sure everything will work out in the end... After all the time we've spent together, I believe in you guys. And more than anything...I believe in my Ultimate Luck! So...it's definitely going to be all right...
After he said that...Nagito walked away.
He just...walked away...
I couldn't even stop him...
I felt...afraid of Nagito.
The madness emanating from Nagito's body was seeping into my bones.
I...never expected him to go this far...

Nagito: How troubling... If the traitor would just come forward, this problem would be resolved in no time.
Hajime: N-Nagito!? When did you--!?
Nagito: Good morning... I came to motivate you guys since you're just laying around.

Nagito: Well, you've got one day left. C'mon, you better hurry.
Kazuichi: H-Hurry...? I'm not the one who has to come forward, the traitor does, right...?
Nagito: Well, that's probably true... But even if this does depend on the traitor, your actions aren't admirable at all... I mean...real hope is when you confront a hopeless difficulty that's standing before you, right? And despite that, you guys are already ready to give up. What does that mean? Or...is this your limit? If so, it makes me laugh to think I ever called you symbols of hope.
Akane: You bastard... You better knock it off...!
Nagito: Now now, keep your shirt on... I took the time to come bring you guys a valuable hint. Wouldn't it be bad if I changed my mind?

Hajime: Nagito...what's your hint?
Nagito: Oh, you finally have hope? That makes me happy.

Akane: Just tell us the answer! If you don't, I'll make you spit it out!
Kazuichi: St-Stop it...! What are we gonna do if he sets off another bomb!?
Nagito: Good judgment. If you guys have time to pick a fight with me, then you should start searching for the bombs already.
Akane: Then I'll just...crush you to pieces later...!
Nagito: How scary.
Chiaki: ... ...Why did you give us a hint?
Nagito: Well, if the traitor sees their friends working hard, they may feeling inclined to come forward, you know?

Nagito: Hey Hajime, as a Reserve Course student, the only thing you can do is become food for the others, you know? So try working a little harder. That way, the traitor will feel like coming forward...

Hajime: If that's true... He gave us a hint even thought he knew we wouldn't be able to use it...
Fuyuhiko: Just so he could...shove that reality in our faces...?

Nagito: If you really want me to spit it out... You should try torturing me or something.
Akane: ...Huh? Torture?
Nagito: Maybe...you can stab my fingers with that fork over there, or scoop my eyes out with that spoon... If you're not willing to fill me with despair, there's no way my hope will ever bre...gh....ghhhhh!

And that's when it happened... In the corner of my eye, I saw him slowly stand up.
Nagito: Thank you Akane... I got to see my dead dog again. I haven't seen him in ages.
Fuyuhiko: Serves you right... You probably pissed off Akane in the first place...
Nagito: Hmmm...I didn't mean to do that though... Anyway, thank you for saving me. Looks like I owe you one.
Sonia: If you sincerely mean that, please tell us the password to enter the ancient ruin.
Nagito: The password? To that ancient ruin? What are you going to do with that?
Fuyuhiko: Don't play dumb... You've hidden the bombs inside that ruin, right?
Nagito: Yep, I did... ...until yesterday.
...Huh?

Nagito: There wasn't anything important inside the ancient ruin... Just some familiar scenery.
Hajime: ...Familiar scenery?
Nagito: I got bored of it. Also...if I hid them in there, it would be completely meaningless. So even if you had managed to learn the password to the ancient ruin, it has no meaning anymore. Now that I've moved the bombs somewhere else.
Chiaki: ...But they were inside that ancient ruin, right?
Nagito: ... Anyway, I guess it was right for me to move them. They were about to be found before the traitor confessed. Well, it's not like it really matters... In fact, that might be better. ...To make hope shine even brighter!

Nagito: It shouldn't be that hard if you guys split up. For now, why don't you guys search everywhere as fast as you can? As long as everyone cooperates...it should be easy to find out where the bombs are.
Hajime: Wh-What the heck...!?
Nagito: It's going to be fine... I'm pretty sure everything will work out in the end... After all, there's no way hope can lose... Absolute hope that can break through any despair can never lose in a place like this! And not only that...I believe in you all. I believe in the time we spent together. And more than anything... I believe in my Ultimate Luck! So it's going to be fine... As long as you believe in hope with all your hearts, the path should open...
With that...Nagito walked away...
...and left us with his sinister mixed message.

But...it's ironic...
Nagito is the reason we're all splitting up, but the reason we're all cooperating...
...is because of Nagito, too.

As soon as I touched the laptop, some kind of program began running all of a sudden...
And almost immediately, a video started playing...

Why hello everyone. Great work...
So you really found the bombs, huh? Believing in you was completely worth it.

So...? Were you surprised?
Seriously...think about it. Do you really think there are enough bombs to blow up an entire island?
Even if there were...a guy like me would never be able to use them.

Kazuichi: No...it looks like the video was set to play after the explosion by a wireless signal from the detonator...

So how did it go? Did the traitor come forward?
If I had to guess...well, I'd say they didn't right?
So then, which is it? It'd make me very happy if you guys could tell me.
I'll be at the warehouse next door waiting for your answer.
From there, we'll compare our answers, and I'll let you know who the traitor really is.
See you later.

I don't know why...
My heart...is racing... It won't settle down...
I'm scared...
As if an intense malice is about to stab me...
Stab me...through my whole body...
And I can't even budge... It feels like everything was too late...

Ch. 5 Deadly Life
Chiaki: We weren't able to see it until a day or so had passed. Apparently it was locked by a timer.

Um... I wonder who's watching this message?
...Is it the traitor from the Future Foundation?
If so, congratulations... Looks like it ended the way I hoped it would.
But...if everyone but the traitor is watching this video...
Then unfortunately, I guess I lost.
That outcome is the complete opposite of the hope I believe in. Well, not that it matters for me anymore...
I mean, no matter what the outcome is, it doesn't matter for a dropout like me.
Now then, let's put this meaningless introduction aside and get down to business.
Since I don't know who I'm talking to, I'm going to speak so that both sides will understand.
First of all, you might be wondering why...I did what I did.
Well...I just took action after talking about it for so long.
The special prize in the Final Dead Room allowed me to learn a certain truth...
It would be troublesome if everyone found out, so I already disposed of that page...
But anyway, I was totally surprised. I mean...
Yin●ingObJoyTy#%'*)▿&cyoum
$psm,03r49jf[@-ultkdrtdes
The Future Foundation's traitor must've known that truth all along...
And so, I was able to learn the truth about this world and resolved to take action immediately.
I shouldn't have made fun of Hajime. Deep down, I always wanted to become a protagonist myself...
42md*)(%^'+'+8rmnfd!@#k
checkthewebfordetails:"?(%*!
...But now that I know that truth, as I look back on Monokuma's actions...
I'm starting to see what he's planning.
By giving us information about the island's mystery and the Future Foundation, he's raising all your hopes...
But only so he can lead you to unimaginable despair...
Plus...Monokuma's trying to show that despair to someone...
Perhaps, that someone is...
seriouslypissingmeoff+hellan1ce2icAntb3l3ves0meth1ngg
00dl1keth1sisonly$102s0happy~=~+1tss0happyOrz

Jeez...what a hopeless truth...
Who is Monokuma's true identity? How could they come up with a plan like that?
But...that's enough reflecting on the past. Let's talk about the future now.
If you want to escape Monokuma's plan, there's a specific place you need to go to...
The key to enter that place...is that message you found at Nezumi Castle.
Normally, you need to follow a bunch of steps to enter that place...
But since that message gets rid of those steps, you can think of it as an easter egg or something.
It was probably left by someone other than Monokuma or Monomi.
But that has nothing to do with me...
Ah, you guysWstillthinkyou're n0tg0nnad13or
s0m3th1ngWWWstopitstopitd0ntMst0p12
...I had to hide this until my plan came to an end, but I guess now's a nice time to announce it, right?
So then...I'll announce the password.
11037.
That...is the password that was written in Nezumi Castle.
You have to use that to enter that specific place. That's the only way you can escape Monokuma.
I feel like I've been talking forever but...that's all for me.
With this, my duty is finished...
I believe my actions will become the foundation of this world's hope.
And...if that really happens...
Praise me.
Tell others what I've accomplished.
Erect a bronze statue of me.
Respect me.
Please call me...the Ultimate Hope.
How much of the plot was Komaeda spoiled for, in the end? I haven't read any supplementary material or played the game pre localisation, and he has yet to reappear in a game that follows DR2 chronologically - but it's safe to say, despite his own wording and delusions of grandeur, that he didn't know everything.

Things he did know:
  • names and photos of the DR1 students, plus a plot summary and the names of the survivors
  • the name of the Tragedy
  • that Monokuma was waiting for someone from the outside world
  • that the Remnants of Despair were basically expendable to Monokuma
  • that Hinata was Kamukura, if not the full significance of Kamukura - the file contained student profiles from after entering school as well, Monokuma says those are what he removed (though the localisation is ambiguous on how detailed those later profiles were)

Some points he never mentions and that he seems unlikely to know:
  • that the Jabberwock Island they know and everyone on it is virtual
  • anything about Junko...
  • the DR1 survivors' connections to the Future Foundation
  • the cause of the Tragedy

    Ambiguous things, to varying degrees:
  • The DR1 survivors, beyond what comes up in Monokuma's files? Despite his ~Ultimate Ultimate fan~ research, his reaction to the rest of the group first hearing about the killing school life in Chapter 4 doesn't seem to be one of recognition, and he also later says of the second file that the its participants are people he doesn't know. A Future Foundation email states that as far as they can tell, the DR2s are the same age as the DR1s.

    Nagito Komaeda: Do you...like ships...?
On the other side of the dark room, I heard a voice. It was clearly directed at me.
Nagito Komaeda: Haha, you looked like you were having fun, so that's what I assumed... You do like ships, right?
???: ...Ships? Ah, that's right...that's it. So this *is* a ship.
Nagito Komaeda: Haha...you just realized that now?
???: ...Is it really that funny?
Nagito Komaeda: ... Hey, if you want, care to talk a little? The silence was starting to bore me.
Instantly, I saw his true character. The overfamiliar attitude, the friendly smile... But under that thin skin, I could detect a foul, offensive odor, like some kind of putrid slime. In a sensible way, of course. How should I put this... It was a smell exclusive to those who were already finished.
Nagito Komaeda: Nice to meet you... I'm Nagito Komaeda. Anyway...lucky me. It's been a while since anyone was willing to talk to me, so to share a room with a person like that... Yep, I'm definitely lucky!
???: ...Lucky? Ah, so that's your talent then. ...What a boring talent.
Nagito Komaeda: A boring talent, huh...? Well, that's exactly what it is... But for someone I'm meeting for the first time to say that so suddenly...
???: That's because I have luck as well.
    Nagito Komaeda: ...Huh?
???: Even I possess a talent as boring as luck.
Nagito Komaeda: "P-Possess", huh...? I'm starting to get really interested! Who are you!? You're obviously from Hope's Peak Academy too, right? So you're one of us? Ah, but that's weird... This is the first time I've ever seen you...
    ???: ...
Nagito Komaeda: Hey, can you tell me why you're here? How did you end up here?
    ???: ... ...How boring.
Nagito Komaeda: Ah, sorry...I'm often told I'm terrible at making conversation...
    ???: Not you... ...This world.
    Nagito Komaeda: Huh...?
???: This world is full of boring people. People who lack talent stick together, and oppress those who do possess talent... Even though they know they're insignificant, they don't try to acknowledge their true superiors... They are profoundly desperate to drag them down to their level... And because of these bastards, the world has come to a deadlock. This world has stopped evolving. ...How boring.
Nagito Komaeda: Well, the world is shaped by the will of the majority... It makes sense that it bends to those who lack talent. That's why we're in our present situation... Ah, perhaps...does that have anything to do with the reason you're here?
???: ... Boring people make no contributions to the world...not even a speck of dust... That's why my teachers taught me that a certain degree of selection must be performed.
Nagito Komaeda: Looks like they had high expectations for you, huh? That's completely different from me. But...what are you planning to do? Now that you've ended up like this, there's nothing you can do, right?
???: Listen well: using people is a talent, too. It is now my turn to use that person just as they used me in the past.
Nagito Komaeda: That person... Are you talking about Ultimate Despair!? But how? I mean, they're already...
???: ...I have it with me. The contribution that person left to me... Even now, it rests in my pocket...
Nagito Komaeda: I-I don't know what you're talking about... Hahaha! I'm definitely lucky! I can't believe I'm speaking with someone as amazing as you!
    [The music starts.]
Nagito Komaeda: Then...will I be able to see her again? Will I be able to see the person I hate with every fiber of my being again? And this time... Will I be able to kill her this time? The person I hate so much?
    ???: ... Hate...? Then...explain your hand.
    Nagito Komaeda: Ah...this...?
???: The end of that bandage... ...is a woman's hand, right?
Nagito Komaeda: Heh heh... Hahahahahahaha! ...Isn't it amazing? I can't move it, of course. I mean, it's not my hand after all! But...even now, it still hasn't rotted... Hey, maybe that means it's becoming one with me! Isn't it amazing? I have successfully become one with Ultimate Despair, my sworn enemy!
???: I see, so you salvaged the body... You really are a boring person.
Nagito Komaeda: Ah, I don't want you to misunderstand. I just see her as my enemy, you know. Because she's my sworn enemy... Because I hate her so much... That's why I took her power. And for that I...
Nagito Komaeda: ...Wait, huh? Do I...hate her? Huh...that's strange... Huh? Huh huh huh huh huh huh huh huh?
    ???: ...
Nagito Komaeda: Ah, look out the window. We're finally here! You're starting to see it too, right? That's Jabberwock Island, isn't it? Isn't it exciting? I wonder what's going to happen on that island once we get there...
???: ...What's going to happen? I can already predict what will happen.
    Nagito Komaeda: ...Huh?
???: I already know because I am loved by talent. But...no matter what happens, it's of no concern to me. I will not be able to participate in what lies ahead.
Nagito Komaeda: Hm? Really...? I don't really understand, but... I guess we have to part ways for a while. That's disappointing...we seemed to get along pretty well. ...Hey, can I see you again?
???: There is no reason we'll ever meet again. After all...you are boring... Your talent, your thoughts, your entire existence is boring to me...
Nagito Komaeda: ... ...You really don't play along, do you?

    Ch. 6 investigation

Hajime: What Nagito said was the true meaning of hope... But for Izuru, hope simply means talent...

Monokuma: With her overwhelming force of personality, Junko recruited the Ultimate Despairs one by one... She controlled their despair by taking advantage of their love, hate, grudges, anything really. Junko's despair is far more dreadful than any other. That idea had been slammed right into their minds. And so, the Ultimate Despairs who had been recruited became nothing more than Junko's limbs. All despair, whether it was their own or anyone else's, was dedicated to Junko Enoshima. Like believers making offerings to their god... Like a mother providing food to her children... They dedicated all despair so they could escape from despair, all in Junko Enoshima's name. For example... They killed their families and friends, and even destroyed their bodies through relentless mutilation. And to hopelessly top it off... They completely believed it was something they *had* to do.

Fuyuhiko: Our school memories... About how many days worth were taken away!?
Monokuma: As the creators of the Neo World Program, only the Future Foundation would know the details but... Around two or three years worth, I assume.
